Institutional Crypto Splits Three Ways: Bitcoin, Circle Arc and ECB Pontes
Corporate bitcoin treasuries monetize capital-market access, Circle is building a private-sector transaction network, and the ECB has put central-bank money underneath tokenised wholesale assets.
Bitcoin's return above $85,000 is occurring alongside two institutional developments whose economics have little to do with owning bitcoin.
Strive disclosed that it bought 1,355 bitcoin at an average price of about $79,475 between September 14 and 18, taking its holdings from 25,000 to 26,355 BTC. Over the same week, effective common shares outstanding rose from 94.97 million to 97.00 million and cash increased from $204.2 million to $229.6 million. Those movements show why the treasury strategy has to be read alongside the company's capital structure rather than as a simple bitcoin holding.
Circle is building a different business. Arc went live on September 16 as an open Layer 1 network for financial-market and payment applications, with more than 100 institutional and ecosystem builders at launch. Circle's opportunity is transaction activity around USDC, applications and financial infrastructure.
The Eurosystem added a third model on September 21. Pontes allows tokenised wholesale-asset transactions to settle in central-bank money. The ECB is also preparing to invest a small portion of its own funds in tokenised public-sector and supranational securities and settle those transactions through Pontes.
Three balance sheets, three return drivers
A corporate bitcoin treasury earns or loses with the asset price and the terms on which the company can raise capital. Arc has to attract applications, liquidity and transaction flow around a private-sector network. Pontes is public market infrastructure whose purpose is to give tokenised securities access to the same risk-free settlement asset used elsewhere in wholesale finance.
Pontes is separate from the retail digital euro. Bitcoin beta, private-sector network economics and public settlement infrastructure now coexist under the broad label of institutional crypto, but their return drivers have diverged.
