Apple offers iPhone Duo replacements as inner screen repairs reach $999
Apple will replace failing inner displays. Its price list puts an out of warranty inner display at $999 against $1,999 for the phone, or $99 with AppleCare.
Price in a $999 repair bill on the iPhone Duo's inner display, half the $1,999 phone, which went on sale on 23 October. Apple will replace failing units free, but only owners who contact AppleCare get that offer. Everyone else pays Apple's published prices.
Warranty and AppleCare coverage determine the owner's financial exposure. Apple's offer turns a possible hinge fault into a cost Apple controls. Later cracks fall to the owner, at $999 or $99 with AppleCare, and replacements come from scarce stock.
Apple made the offer on 26 October, three days after launch. Its statement, reported by Reuters, read: "We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement."
Apple added that affected units tend to show the problem quickly. Weekend social posts had shown cracks and lines in the inner display along the central hinge, where the phone folds.
What may be causing the failures
The repair specialist iFixit offers a candidate cause. Its teardown on 25 October quotes owners who heard a noise while opening or closing the phone. They then saw a small line down the fold and a bright line across the display.
The failures came fast. One phone failed within six hours of purchase and another before setup finished. The breaks cluster near where the flex cable crosses the gap to the central hinge support.
iFixit's model of the hinge, built from teardown footage, patents and CT scans, shows the centre support bar failing to drop far enough as the phone closes. The screen's fold lands on it, creating a small stress point near the reported breaks. iFixit offers this as "one possible answer" and sets aside the accordion cable as the cause.
Apple's product page promises a hinge "designed to open and close with smooth, balanced resistance for long-lasting reliability". A repair bill this large tests that promise.
Repair prices and AppleCare coverage
Apple's service page sets out of warranty prices. The cover layer costs $49 and the outer display $379. The inner display costs $999 and other damage $1,499.
The inner display is the main repair cost to watch. It costs 2.6 times the $379 outer display. On the $2,199 512GB model it is 45% of the price.
The repair represents a smaller share of the higher capacity models' prices. The 1TB model costs $2,599 and the 2TB $3,199, so the repair falls to 38% on the 1TB and 31% on the 2TB.
Apple also prices the Duo's other repairs above the iPhone 18 Pro. iFixit's comparison of Apple's pages shows other damage at $1,499 on the Duo against $849 on the 18 Pro. The outer display is $379 against $329.
Apple lists an out of warranty inner display repair for the iPhone Duo at 999 dollars, against 568 dollars for Google's Pixel 11 Pro Fold and 579 or 419 dollars for Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8. With AppleCare the Duo repair is 99 dollars.

| Inner display repair | Estimated inner display repair price, dollars |
|---|---|
| iPhone Duo with AppleCare | 99 |
| Galaxy Z Fold8 screen repair | 419 |
| Pixel 11 Pro Fold | 568 |
| Galaxy Z Fold8 screen module | 579 |
| iPhone Duo without AppleCare | 999 |
Battery service costs $229 against $129 on the 18 Pro. iFixit puts that down to the Duo's two batteries.
AppleCare removes most of the exposure. Apple's AppleCare service list puts the inner display repair at $99 against $999 without cover. That saves $900 on one repair.
The same cover trims every other line. The outer display repair is $29, the cover layer $19 and other accidental damage $99. Battery service is free, and theft or loss costs $149.
Apple's page for the phone shows two plans. AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss covers unlimited repairs for accidents like drops and spills, plus up to two theft or loss claims every 12 months. AppleCare One covers up to three products at one price, and adds more products for $5.99 a month each.
Both plans include 24/7 priority support from Apple experts. AppleCare+ also adds Express Replacement Service, where Apple ships a replacement before the damaged phone comes back. For a company, that means staff keep a working phone while the damaged one is repaired.
Rival repair costs and supply limits
Rival foldables are cheaper to fix. Google's repair pricing guide lists a cracked inner screen on the Pixel 11 Pro Fold at $568. Samsung's repair page lists the Galaxy Z Fold8 inner screen at $579 as a module replacement and $419 as a screen repair.
Apple's $999 is about 1.7 times the first two figures and 2.4 times the cheapest. The gap shows on the outer screen too, where Samsung lists the Fold8 at $139 against Apple's $379.
Apple's price also anchors the market for third party parts. iFixit expects to sell replacement screens, which it says will not be cheap. Apple has published a repair manual, and iFixit gives the Duo a provisional 5 out of 10 for repairability, the highest it has given a foldable.
Fixing the inner screen "is still going to be a bear", iFixit warns. Apple's Repair Assistant must install calibration data to finish an inner display repair.
Supply is the second constraint. Preorder delivery estimates for every configuration slipped to 25 January within minutes of orders opening, and Apple capped preorders at two handsets per customer. A failed unit is replaced from the same scarce stock, so a company fleet that loses a phone to a cracked screen could wait weeks.
IDC rates Apple's response well. IDC's Francisco Jeronimo, speaking of Samsung's 2019 Galaxy Fold problems, said a fast and transparent response can contain the damage to a category. He called Apple's offer the "right first step".
Apple has much at stake: it aims to lead the foldable category with this phone. IDC expects Apple to take 44% of foldable market value in 2026 on 31% of units. It expects Apple to lead in both value and units in 2027.
Apple reports September quarter results on 2 November, with the call at 5 p.m. ET. That quarter closed before the Duo shipped, so the call is John Ternus's first chance to address the screen failures with investors.
The December quarter, due in late January, is the first with a full quarter of Duo sales and warranty cost. With shipping dates at 25 January, replacements compete with new orders for the same phones. An owner outside the offer pays $999, or $99 with cover.
