Samsung lost a quarter of record profit in market value in one day over a chip that has no specifications or ship date
Samsung's shares fell 7.4% on Tuesday, about 108 trillion won, almost exactly its record third quarter operating profit, after CXMT announced progress on a denser DRAM cell. The desk reads the fall as a price on CXMT's 9.5% market share, not on the 4F2 design.
Samsung Electronics lost about 108 trillion won of market value on Tuesday. That is almost exactly the 107.4 trillion won of operating profit the company guided for its record third quarter.
A rival announced a memory design with no specifications and no ship date. The announcement removed a full quarter of the best earnings in Samsung's history.
The market is repricing how long Samsung's peak memory profit can last, not the unshipped 4F2 design. CXMT, the Chinese DRAM maker, is already taking share while memory prices are rising.
The 4F2 announcement was the trigger. The damage to Samsung and SK hynix is a rerating of profit duration.
The size of the move is easy to check. Google Finance data for Samsung shows the stock down 18,500 won, or 7.4%, at 232,000 won in Tuesday trading.
Multiplied by 5.85 billion common shares, that is 108.2 trillion won. Preferred shares are left out, so the figure is conservative.
SK hynix fell 10.1% to 1,443,000 won. The Kospi index fell more than 5% to about 6,035. Both numbers come from market data pages on Tuesday and are not final settlement figures.
CXMT's president, Cao Kanyu, told a chip conference in Shanghai on 10 October that the company had made key research and development progress on 4F2 DRAM architecture, according to DRAMeXchange, the TrendForce price service.
He said CXMT expects to launch a new DDR5 RDIMM, a server memory module, that combines 4F2 with hybrid bonding by the end of 2026. The conference gave no hardware specifications and no exact release date.
CXMT says it holds more than 300 public patent families on 4F2. It says the design rests on a vertical surrounded gate transistor. Mainstream DRAM today uses a 6F2 layout.
DRAMeXchange notes that the original design and process flow cannot be reused. A move to 4F2 therefore needs new equipment and new process steps. A server module also needs testing with server makers before it ships in volume.
None of that can change DRAM supply this year. A design announced in October without a datasheet cannot change the number of chips available to buyers in the fourth quarter.
What is already real is share. TrendForce data relayed by the Korea Herald put CXMT at 9.5% of DRAM revenue in the second quarter, up from 7.6% in the first.
Total second quarter DRAM revenue was $154.73 billion. That implies about $14.7 billion for CXMT, since the company does not disclose revenue. SK hynix gave up the most, falling from 28.8% to 24.9%.
CXMT raised its share of global DRAM revenue from 7.6% in the first quarter of 2026 to 9.5% in the second, while SK hynix fell from 28.8% to 24.9%.
View data
| Maker | First quarter 2026 | Second quarter 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung | 38.5 | 39.4 |
| SK hynix | 28.8 | 24.9 |
| Micron | 22.4 | 23.3 |
| CXMT | 7.6 | 9.5 |
Those gains came in a market where prices were rising. Total DRAM revenue grew 59.5% from the first quarter, and Samsung and Micron both lifted their own shares slightly.
Spot DDR5 was still quoted higher on 13 October in Shenzhen and Hong Kong. Taiwan DDR5 chip prices also extended gains on very scarce volume, DRAMeXchange reported.
The risk to Samsung is the price regime and product mix over the next few quarters, rather than a loss of units today. A supplier with 9.5% of revenue can add capacity in a shortage. Each extra wafer gives buyers more room to push back on contract prices.
The valuation shows how much of that risk the market has already taken. Samsung's market value of 1,494 trillion won is about 3.5 times its guided third quarter operating profit annualised to 429.6 trillion won.
Its price to earnings ratio is 10.3, and the stock is 38% below its 52 week high of 374,500 won. The Samsung guidance puts that quarter up 782.5% on a year earlier. At these multiples the market already prices a sharp fall from the third quarter run rate.
CXMT's own shares tell the same story from the other side. They fell 2.79% to 46.99 yuan, and sit 24% below their 52 week high with a price to earnings ratio of 38. The announcement hurt the incumbents far more than the company that made it.
There is a rival explanation. The Guardian reported that Broadcom chief executive Hock Tan told a Singapore conference that investors "have no clue" and are "in a casino".
Broadcom fell 0.2% and Nvidia 0.8% on the same remarks. Memory names fell between 4.8% and 10%. Micron's 4.8% drop came after the US open and was not a final figure.
The sector that took the damage is the one with a Chinese entrant. CXMT explains the dispersion better than a general warning about AI spending.
Korean memory has reacted this way before. On 28 July, the day after CXMT's STAR Market debut, the Kospi fell 10.84% to 6,023.63. Samsung and SK hynix were hit by worries over competition and AI financing.
Tuesday's index is back near that level. Both explanations can be true: nervousness about AI spending gave the push, and CXMT gave the target.
For buyers the consequence is practical. Procurement leads at server and PC makers, and hyperscaler memory buyers, now hold a credible second supplier story for 2027 long term supply talks with Samsung, SK hynix and Micron.
The price of using it is qualification time and policy exposure on Chinese parts. Equipment makers sit on the other side of the trade. Tokyo Electron fell 7.15% on Tuesday, and because 4F2 needs new process steps, any switch is a capital spending decision rather than a drop in replacement.
Samsung's final third quarter results on 29 October are the first test. If memory profit tracks the 107.4 trillion won guidance and management gives no sign of DDR5 contract price concessions, Tuesday's fall will look like a rerating of duration.
CXMT's year end RDIMM is the second test. A specification sheet and a named server qualification partner by 31 December would move the story from share to technology. Silence would leave the fall resting on the 9.5%.
