Shipping Industry Prepares for World-First Mandatory CO2 Charge

The shipping industry is on the brink of becoming a test case for a groundbreaking initiative: the introduction of a global, mandatory charge on greenhouse gas emissions. Discussions at a London meeting brought the International Maritime Organization, the global regulatory body for shipping, closer to the implementation of such a levy. The United Nations agency is aiming to put the finishing touches on the measure next year, with the goal of enforcing it by 2027.
