UBS's $80 Silver Target Needs $5,280 Gold or a 55 Gold-Silver Ratio
Silver is trading as higher-beta gold. The target math shows how much of the bullish case has to come from the monetary leg rather than industrial scarcity alone.
UBS expects silver to reach $70 an ounce by December 2026, $75 in March and June 2027 and $80 by September 2027. Against its September 18 reference price of $66.50, the final target implies about 20% upside.
The bank's explanation is primarily monetary. UBS strategist Dominic Schnider says silver's correlation with gold is near multi-year highs and that recent price action resembles a higher-beta version of gold.
The target becomes more informative when converted back into that ratio. Gold settled at $4,385.90 on September 18 while silver closed at $66.556, a ratio of about 66. If the ratio stayed there, $80 silver would imply gold near $5,280. If gold instead stayed around $4,386, silver at $80 would compress the ratio to about 55.
Those are very different paths. The first requires a large further move in gold with silver keeping pace. The second requires silver to materially outperform gold. Either route confirms that the $80 call is not simply a forecast of industrial users consuming more metal.
Positioning adds another wrinkle. CFTC data for September 15 showed COMEX silver open interest at 103,745 contracts. Non-commercial traders held 35,395 long contracts against 10,069 shorts, a net long of 25,326 contracts. The market is already carrying a sizeable speculative long.
Bernstein's separate 2030 gold forecast provides a consistency check. Its revised target is $5,600. At a gold-silver ratio of 70, $5,600 gold maps exactly to $80 silver. The arithmetic fits, but the horizons do not: UBS wants silver at $80 by September 2027, roughly three years before Bernstein's gold target date. UBS therefore needs either a faster gold move, a lower ratio, or both.
Industrial demand still supports the physical case. Silver is used in solar, electronics and electrical systems, while most mine supply arrives as a by-product of other metals. But the ratio math clarifies the portfolio bet: an $80 target remains heavily exposed to gold demand, real yields, the dollar and investor positioning.
