OpenAI Tests Sponsored Agents as ChatGPT Moves Toward Conversion

OpenAI is registering interest for future Sponsored Agents testing with HubSpot, not launching a guaranteed beta. The format matters because it could move ChatGPT from selling attention toward selling qualified commercial conversations.

OpenAI has started registering advertiser interest for future testing of Sponsored Agents with HubSpot, a format that would let a user converse with a branded agent inside ChatGPT. The company says potential participants may need automated creative and bidding tools plus a minimum daily spend for 28 days, but the criteria are not final and registration does not guarantee access or a launch date.

The test extends an ad business that is already large enough to matter but still small relative to OpenAI as a whole. The company said in August that ChatGPT Ads had reached roughly $1 billion of annualized revenue. The Financial Times reported on Wednesday that OpenAI's overall annualized revenue is about $40 billion as it discusses financing around a $1.2 trillion valuation.

That puts advertising at roughly 2.5% of the reported company-wide run-rate on a simple scale comparison. The accounting bases may differ, so the ratio should not be treated as a forecast. It does make one point clear: advertising is currently an incremental monetization layer, not the main support for the valuation.

Sponsored Agents could make that layer richer. A display placement sells an impression or click. An agent can stay with the user through questions, qualification and handoff, giving OpenAI something closer to a lead-generation or transaction product. The commercial upside depends on whether advertisers can measure incremental conversion across a multi-turn conversation.

That same design raises the trust cost. Paid agents have to be visibly separated from organic assistance, and OpenAI has to show that sponsorship does not distort unrelated answers. If it can do that, the important shift is not more ad inventory; it is a higher-value unit of commerce inside the chat. The $1.2 trillion valuation discussion still rests on subscriptions, APIs and enterprise revenue. Sponsored Agents matter if they prove ChatGPT can take a meaningful cut of commercial intent as well.
