Salesforce to buy Rune Technologies to put Missionforce at the military's logistics edge
Salesforce has signed to acquire Rune Technologies, a logistics software firm that Salesforce says is already deployed with the Army and Marine Corps. The release states no price.
Salesforce signed a definitive agreement on 29 October 2026 to buy Rune Technologies, according to Salesforce's release. Rune makes edge-native logistics and sustainment software for the US military and its allies. The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of Salesforce's fiscal 2027, subject to customary conditions. Salesforce's fiscal year ends on 31 January, so that quarter ends on 31 January 2027.
Salesforce describes a three layer architecture for its Missionforce defence unit. In its words, Missionforce holds the first two layers, enterprise systems of record and strategic headquarters planning. Rune "completes the third", the operational edge. That layer is meant to keep working where connectivity is denied, degraded, intermittent or limited, and to sync when the network returns. Salesforce says Rune can connect the operational edge to its enterprise systems "without custom integration".
Salesforce's 16 September release described Missionforce Operations as turning paper-bound processes into digital workflows. It named procurement, supplier management and invoice audits. It gave an air gapped fleet-maintenance scenario as an example.
Salesforce says Rune is already deployed with the US Army and the US Marine Corps. David Tuttle, its chief executive, and Peter Goldsborough launched it in 2024, with leadership backgrounds at Anduril. Kendall Collins, president and chief executive of Missionforce and Government Cloud, calls it "our most significant acquisition in this space".
The release also says Salesforce's defence business is growing 80 percent year on year, one year after its launch. Salesforce says its defence customers span all six branches of the US military. That is Salesforce's own growth rate. With no revenue base given, it gives no sense of the business's size.
The release states no price, revenue or customer count for Rune. Salesforce's phrase "without custom integration" is its own claim for how Rune connects to enterprise systems.
Salesforce positions Rune as completing the third layer of its three layer Missionforce stack, the operational edge. The release identifies the operational edge as Rune's role in that architecture. CTOL's view is that 31 January 2027, the end of the quarter in which Salesforce expects to close, is the next checkpoint. Whether the deal has closed by then is the open question.
